Katarina Bjelke

Director General of the Swedish Research Council

Katarina Bjelke was appointed Director General of the Swedish Research Council in 2022. Previously she was University Director at Karolinska Institutet as well as at Uppsala University. From 2008, she worked seven years as Director of Research Policies for the Government with main
responsibility for the research policy bill for Sweden, which is put forward every fourth year. Simultaneously she was responsible for a number of research infrastructure agencies and the Swedish universities. With a degree in Dentistry and a PhD in Neuroscience from Karolinska Institutet, she has also previously worked as Director for Research and Postgraduate Education at Karolinska Institutet. She has hold positions as Chair of the Audit Committee of the Nobel Foundation and the Swedish National Space Agency, elected member of the boards of Young Academy of Sweden, the Association of SE HigherEducation Institutions, European Spallation Source, STINT and several holding companies.
